It’s not easy to publicly show scars on your body, and it’s much, much harder for celebrities to do it since everyone holds them to such a high standard. They’re expected to be perfect at all times, which is why it takes all the more courage for them to admit that they’re not everything that the public thinks them to be. Whether it’s admitting that they’ve been having trouble with the pressures of fame, mental health, or anything else, it takes the bravest of celebrities to come forward with their problems.
Sarah Hyland, who has been inĀ Modern Family, the popular comedy show, since the beginning has recently been through such an event. She stars as eldest daughter, Haly Dunphy, and is extremely popular with the public, and has admitted to going through a lot of problems due to the kidney transplants that she’s been through.
She’s finally revealed the hardships that she’s been going through due to this, and it’s pretty heartbreaking how an actress who has brought so much joy to the world has been suffering in silence for so long. Hyland suffers from dysplasia, and it has been really difficult for her throughout her life. It’s been the cause for a total of 16 surgeries that Hyland has had to go through during her life, and we can only hope that there won’t be any more in the future.
The first kidney transplant that she had was back in 2012. The kidney donor was her own father, and things might have been fine from then onward, but her body rejected the kidney, which caused her to go through yet another transplant. She’s said that she felt like a failure after her body rejected her father’s kidney. Sarah realized that it wasn’t her fault, but she says that she still felt horrible about the entire ordeal and still felt that she was the one at fault for the kidney rejection. It wasn’t easy to realize that after her father had gone through so much trouble for her, everything that was done felt like it was done for nothing.
This was one of the most devastating and dark times in Hyland’s life, and as she discussed the next transplant, this time from her own brother, she faced a period of darkness. However, it’s great that she never went through with anything of the sort, and it looks like her kidney transplant in 2017 went as it should have and things have been normalized as much as possible.
Of course, it’s not like the only mark that these transplants had on her were mental. They’ve caused some swelling in her abdominal area which makes a small bump where the kidney has been connected to her body. She’s really struggled with it, and has even given it the name of KUPA. She said she’s been really conscious of it showing in public. It’s been bad enough for her to have meltdowns while thinking about his bump showing, but she’s finally changed how she feels about it.
She’s revealed the scar on social media, and did so in a pretty casual and fun way at that. What’s great is that everyone on social media came out with their own stories about the scars they have on their body and congratulated Sarah on coming out with hers. The support that she’s received online is unprecedented.
Sarah’s a survivor, and is someone that people around the world can be inspired by. She’s braved her way through stigma and and her own fears, and she’s shown everyone that it’s possible to be yourself and accept yourself for who you are in a positive manner. She’s done her part when it comes to mental health and body positivity.
Celebrities really help when it comes to standards revolving around body image. It’s hard to imagine how tough it must have been for Sarah to reveal something that she’s been so vulnerable about, but we’re glad that she finally overcame her fears of negative public perception and simply went with it. With enough efforts like this, we won’t have to worry about anyone being looked down upon due to scars like this in the upcoming future, and we won’t have any young people who’ll feel as though if they’re alone due to such problems.
