Every other day, there is a new thriller on the OTT platform vying for our attention. But the thing about thrillers in general or whodunits in particular, most of them do not keep us invested till the end credits roll. However, there are shows which surprise us and so unbelievably good. The Undoing on HBO falls in that category. There are many reasons that the mini-series on HBO is a must-see. Well, we could give you more than four reasons to love this series, but let’s stick to only four for now, shall we?
Stellar Performances
The ensemble cast is one of the best ones to see in recent times. It is all about how the ensemble cast turns out with some of the best performances here. Nicole Kidman, playing Grace Jones, lets her eyes do the talking.
The entire story revolves around her and her husband, whose role is remarkably played by Hugh Grant. It’s not the usual Hugh Grant you will see here, the charming man in romantic comedies, but a layered man who reveals his insides after each episode. He is riveting, and his regular image of a man who could do no wrong, kind of works for him here. The other cast member who deserves more than a passing mention, is the formidable Donald Sutherland, his steely presence kind of makes up for the less screen time. Noah Jupe, the child actor who demonstrates a gamut of emotions with precision and experience. Elena Alves, with the least screen time, is impactful and mesmerizing.
The Whodunit Angle
It is a murder mystery, so the question is, who murdered Elena Alves? And the beauty of the story is we couldn’t for a second deduce who did it. Our minds kept on going over the long list of suspects, and we thought he/she is the one till the last few moments when the murderer’s name is revealed. No wonder it is one of the most-watched series in recent times! There are clues everywhere, but we couldn’t quite catch the red herrings. That’s what makes it so thrilling!
The Storyline
The novel by Jean Hanff Korelitz provides a worthy premise to a fascinating storyline. However, the show deviates quite a bit from the book and adds some amazing twists and turns to the basic story. So, if you have already read the story and wondering whether it is living up to the novel, rest assured you’ll be surprised pleasantly.
The show is engaging, exciting, and thrilling and lives up to our expectations, unlike most novel adaptations. Kudos to the maker for a story that keeps the viewers riveted to most of its screen time. It is no mean feat since there are so many content options for the viewers today. Most viewers couldn’t wait to watch the final episode, which speaks volumes of the show’s popularity.
It Is a Mini-Series
If you have seen Chernobyl, you’ll know The Undoing is on similar lines. So, you don’t have to watch a whole lot of episodes to find out who the killer is. Sometimes it can be tedious to watch many seasons to know the killer and his/ her motives. The final of The Undoing is one of the most-watched series after Big Little Lies’s final episode. Also, spending six hours a day watching a show is a better option too.
With the pandemic restricting us to our homes, OTTs have become the only source of entertainment. And the last few months have seen numerous engaging shows and movies releasing on the OTTs with exceptional content. And each one of them has been more compelling than the other, giving us reasons to binge-watch them all! We are sure The Undoing would find a place in your binge-watch list too.
