Halloween is around the corner which is definitely the perfect time of the year where we’d all love to binge on some quality horror flicks. While you have witnessed several entertaining horror movies being churned out this year, there have been quite a ridiculous few that you need to maintain a safe distance from. Horror, as we all know, is the most unpredictable genre, owing to its low budgetary requirements and the bulk in which they are released. And a few appalling offerings have astonishingly even made their way to the giant screen. So, at the onset of Halloween, you will indeed damage your tastes if you bother yourself with such distasteful horror flicks. While you are on the lookout for a scary movie to binge on this time, here are the offerings that you must avoid to maintain your sanity.
Slender Man
An adaptation of the creepypasta meme, Slender Man has frittered away its already paltry potential with silly teen protagonists, a PG-13 rating, and a hackneyed final editing, chopping off plenty of key scenes. Apart from a few stylish sequences, the movie doesn’t even accidentally stand as laughable. Slender Man is completely soulless and is a disbelieving attempt to put forth a bland horror flick. Efforts could have been much more decent, but alas! Slender Man falls flat on its face.
Winchester
This old-school horror movie churned out by the Spierig brothers can make even Slender Man look sprightly in comparison. Helen Mirren is at her worst, to be precise, and we can only blame the film. Winchester, with its unique setting and quite a good premise, looks promising only till it derails from its path and tortures us with its excessive illustrative dialogues and ineffective jump scares. Winchester was portrayed as a throwback to the era of Hammer horror. However, the film is far from entertaining and is a complete burden on film buffs.
The Strangers: Prey At Night
Aside from the well-executed pool scene, this flick is a genuine headache, and you can’t blame anyone for not being able to sit through its entirety. The build-up isn’t one bit appealing, and the so-called suspense sequences are a complete mess. Prey At Night is a fare that commits a blunder of killing off the best characters much earlier than anyone could expect. The performances are quite up to the mark, but frankly speaking, none of them had much to do throughout the film’s entirety. The 80s music grows on you, but all in all, avoiding this flick is advisable.
Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween
The first Goosebumps film fared much beyond our expectations. But this sequel of sorts pales in comparison and lacks the charm that the prequel promised. The absence of Jack Black can be considered for the debacle. Goosebumps 2 is a complete waste of time, and you realize the same from the start itself. The flick indulges too much in teen melodrama, making the audience wonder why on earth are they even watching the fare? The second part of the franchise has derailed from its path badly and eventually bombed at the box-office.
The Open House
If you are looking out for suspense, thrill, and horror, then The Open House is not your cup of tea. Irrespective of fine performances from Dylan Minnette and Piercey Dalton, the flick stands out as perhaps the most forgettable horror fare so far in 2018. The film has an uncanny ability to make you pass out in boredom within half-an-hour of its inception. We have always known that Netflix is a fabulous platform for talented and ambitious filmmakers. But little did we know that it can also be a favorite dumping ground for formulaic garbage that doesn’t get a theatrical release. The opening scene is as dreadful as the ending. Well, watch this trash at your own risk.
Now, don’t blame anyone that you weren’t warned beforehand. Halloween is a time when you would thrive on classy horror flicks that sends a shiver down your spine. But, the above-listed horror fares can disgust you to extreme levels. You are always free to take your pick and make your Halloween a memorable one. But think before you take the leap. Therefore, read plenty of reviews before choosing a horror flick. Happy Halloween, folks!
